The Hormel Heroes Scholarship Program was established by Hormel Foods to support students with military backgrounds pursuing degrees in a culinary arts or food service management related program and operated by the National Restaurant Education Foundation (NRAEF).

Gilman is a US Marine Corps sergeant as the 3,381 food service professionals aboard Camp Pendleton. She is in her second year of an undergraduate program at American Public University and is majoring in Hospitality Management with a concentration in Food Services and a certificate in Restaurant Operations.
“My goal is to own real estate in Virginia, where I will operate a vineyard venue with a vision to create a long-term sustainable family legacy. Gilman said I envision my family working alongside me and raising our family’s name with hard work, passion, dedication, clarity and perseverance. “My first job was working in a family owned authentic Mexican restaurant, where I started as a hostess at 15. I made my way into a waitress when I turned 18, graduated from high school and moved independently. I learned what it means to work hard in this family restaurant, and it set the tone for a I did it as a food service specialist in the military.
Pickard is a Veteran who served with the rank of Sergeant First Class in the United States Air Force. She is currently in her third year of an undergraduate program at The Culinary Institute of America Specialized in baking and pastry arts. She is working towards her goal of being her own baking coach.
“My career goals are to be a bakery and pastry instructor at a college or university,” Pickard said. “I had the opportunity in the Army to mentor young soldiers to become 92J (food service professionals).” “I fell in love with teaching when I was an advanced culinary teacher at Fort Lee, Virginia. This scholarship from the prestigious National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation will help me achieve this lifelong goal. I feel humbled as I think about my life and see myself accepted in me Culinary Institute of America. “
