Modi announced on Monday that from now on, the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda will be commemorated in line with the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who gave their lives for the nation.
Here’s a preview of “The Legend of Birsa Munda” by Tuhin A. Sinha and Ankita Verma:
In 19th century India, in the heart of what is now the state of Jharkhand, the Adivasi lived a life of misery and absolute darkness. The colonial state, with the help of disingenuous local collaborators, has cast a web of abuse and exploitation that is being tightened around this adivasis, just like a noose. Everything dear to them – their land, their homes, their history and traditions, their religion and their families – have fallen victim to the grand colonial plan to build a magnificent and merciless empire for the Queen.
However, when people are crushed into dust and their identities threatened with complete obliteration, they explode like a blow of hot and angry fire so loud that it reverberates through the heart of the empire and sends out a furious fear of the thorns of those in power. Fire fuels rebellion. At the heart of this rebellion is the twenty-five-year-old Mrs. Birsa Munda. He decides what to do to save his community and leads the adivasis in the fight to get their lives back.
He was a Lionhearted Warrior. Healer, spiritual guide, forgotten hero.
Based on true events, this epic tale of bravery is a tribute to the life of Bersa Munda, who, in his very short life, rallied tribal society, rebelled against forced conversions, envisioned a more just and just society and died fighting for it. A thrilling story chronicling what most history books don’t mention, “The Legend of Birsa Munda” (Amaryllis) is the story of a vassal tribal hero, whose contribution to India’s struggle for independence must never be forgotten.
