Martinsburg – After eight seasons in the NFL, Fulton Walker retired from the game, but his legacy lives on in Martinsburg through scholarship opportunities.
Walker has spent his life with strong roots in Martinsburg. His family and friends established the Fulton Locker Jr. Scholarship Fund in his memory at the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation.
The mission of the Fulton L. Walker Jr Scholarship Foundation is to inspire, encourage, and support graduating Berkeley County high school students to college by providing scholarships
The Fulton Locker Jr Foundation Scholarship Committee believes that students need and deserve education after high school.
Lack of money should not be an obstacle to a student pursuing his goals. Since its founding in 2016, the Fulton L. Walker Jr. Scholarship Foundation has impacted the lives of local youth by awarding scholarships from generous donors, networking with local businesses and leaders for the entire community, and advising students and their families on how to do so. to save for college, fund it, and reach out to encourage disadvantaged or marginalized students,” according to the values of the Fulton L. Walker, Jr. Scholarship Committee.
According to Charles Mason, committee member and friend of Walker’s, the foundation seeks collaboration and participation, and is passionate about giving back to those in need in the community.
“I would like to thank the community for their support of the Fulton L. Walker Jr Scholarship Foundation,” Mason said. “Through their donations, we have provided eight scholarships. We have held four tournaments so far, and raised a total of $74,533. We focus on supporting the Berkeley County School System by awarding scholarships to those pursuing a higher education. This is our mission “.
Walker was a four-wheeler for the Bulldogs, and he excelled in soccer. He went on to play in the WVU, and Walker eventually played in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Raiders. Walker played football and baseball for mountain climbers. In addition, he volunteered as a coach and mentor for young athletes.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank all participants, sponsors, and organizers for sharing your time and resources to make this golf tournament a success. You clearly appreciate the education and opportunities it provides to students who have been selected as recipients of the Fulton L. Walker Jr. Scholarship,” wrote Patrick Murphy, Superintendent of Berkeley County Schools , in an official letter to the institution. “So far, eight Berkeley School District students have benefited from the money raised through this tournament and committee, and I know these students have been well deserved and appreciated.”
Mason added that the foundation was aiming to raise $100,000 in the five years since the grant was established, a goal they are “on track to achieve,” according to Mason, since they did not participate in the tournament last year due to COVID-19. .
With grant money coming in from the golf tournament as well as from donations, Mason said the community can sign up to play the tournament on April 29 or donate at www.fulton-walker-scholarship-classic.perfectgolfevenvent.com/about-us.
