She was world number 1 in singles by the WTA on five different occasions. Maria is the only Russian to win a Grand Slam. She started her professional tennis career at the age of 14.

In 1989, Maria Sharapova and her family moved to Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia. In 1991, Alexander Kafelnikov, a friend of the family, gifted Maria Sharapova his first tennis racket.
Then she began to exercise regularly with her father in a local park. Maria Sharapova had her first tennis lessons with veteran Russian coach Yuri Yutkin.
Sharapova began playing tennis when she was a little girl, and in 1993 she caught the attention of Czech-born American tennis star Martina Navratilova. After a suggestion from Navratilova, Sharapova and her father (1994) moved to Florida.
Maria Sharapova was not granted admission to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy immediately because she was too young to join the academy. She initially started coaching tennis at the Rick Mackie Tennis Academy.
Soon, she got a scholarship to a tennis academy. In 2001, at the age of fourteen, she became a professional. In 1995, IMG signed with Maria Sharapova. IMG agreed to pay the $35,000 annual tuition fee for Sharapova to remain at the academy.

In 2004, Maria Sharapova managed to enter the top ten for the first time. Maria Sharapova claimed her first Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon 2004. At the 2004 WTA Tour, Maria Sharapova won the finals against Serena Williams.
On August 22, 2005, Maria Sharapova was the first Russian woman to win the world rankings. In 2012, Maria Sharapova was only the tenth to complete her Grand Slam tournament by winning the French Open.
Maria Sharapova claimed her first Grand Slam singles title since 2008 and her fourth overall title at the 2012 French Open, making her the sixth woman in the Open era to complete a Grand Slam singles tournament.
She has 5 Grand Slam titles with 35 singles titles. Maria Sharapova was the first torchbearer at the 2014 Winter Olympics lighting ceremony in Russia.
